Konstantin: Grandmother’s Tongue

May 22, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$40

Everybody knows Konstantin, the loudest rooster in the village! But how did he get here? Did he fly? Did he walk? Did he swim? Flightless birds from the jungles of South-East Asia, chickens didn’t get anywhere on their own. The story of their global journey reveals other hidden histories – of trade, war, piracy, slavery and good old-fashioned adventure – stretching back thousands of years.

Watch, listen and learn as Grandmother Babcia and Kazia the Hen invoke the ghosts of the past, unveil unexpected dimensions of the present and foretell the future!
Konstantin emerged from conversations I was having with the designer, Dagmara, who is Polish.  She and I worked together on a previous project, which was The Book of Revelations, a theatre  performance which explores dementia. We thought, alright what are we going to do next? Both of  us are very keen on fairy tales and folk traditions. We tried to bring it into a contemporary context.  There’s a big tradition of roosters being a symbol of courage and cheekiness. It explores migration,  immigration and refuge, asking ‘where do chickens actually come from?’ They are actually south east Asian birds that cannot fly. There’s a whole mystery that emerges. This song cycle is about  not having borders, the story has no borders.” Alison Richards, writer and performer
